As an exercise I wanted to take a moment to clearly define words that are important to me and that I commonly use in my books and essays. There are limitless ways that you can look at the world. This is just how I have come to make sense of these words.
Self-awareness – This is the root of observation that is based on turning your attention inward to look at your patterns and where they come from. Understanding your past helps you see why you perceive the present in the way that you do. The goal of self-awareness is to have a better sense of the major factors that have shaped your identity and your behaviors. Self-awareness on a daily level looks like paying attention to when your emotions change and what is making them change. There is an element of building self-responsibility where you are not letting yourself automatically jump to blame whenever you feel a tough emotion; instead you watch yourself and notice that it is natural to move through the ups and downs of human experience.
Emotional maturity – Self-awareness is the foundation that emotional maturity stands on. After getting a good sense of your internal landscape, you start to build the wisdom of feeling without becoming. Self-awareness repeatedly shows you that every emotion is temporary; this creates a new resilience that supports you in being honest about what you are feeling without letting it make you impulsive and reactive. Not only can you feel your emotions with spaciousness and calm clarity, but you have the energy to make different choices. Emotional maturity is living with intention instead of unconscious reaction. Emotional maturity is what stops your past from taking over your present; it is you saying no to old ways of being that no longer serve you. Emotional maturity is where messy reaction ends, and where you start showing up in a way that is aligned with your values.
Emotional intelligence – The combination of self-awareness and emotional maturity gives you such a deep understanding of the human experience that patience and compassion start to flourish. Not only for yourself, but also for others. Having the experience of looking inward demystifies the mind, which then helps you see others with selfless clarity. Tough conversations become easier and forgiving others becomes a new option. You become more flexible about finding a middle path when handling an argument with someone you care for and you start to see the perspectives of others instead of getting stuck in your own. Emotional intelligence is the glue that helps create interpersonal harmony and truly nourishing connections. Emotional intelligence is the openness to growth that helps you build good relationships where you make others feel seen and heard. Emotional intelligence also helps you figure out who your people are.
Self-love – Self-love is doing what you need to do to heal and free yourself. It is taking your evolution into your own hands. Self-love is the raw energy that you need to break stagnant ways of being and start becoming the true designer of your life. Self-love sometimes looks like treating yourself better and with more kindness, but the deeper aspect of self-love is developing a new and healthier relationship with your mind and heart. It is a mixture of acceptance and transformation: gently accepting what your self-awareness uncovers because being harsh towards yourself is not productive and realizing that there is great benefit in building new habits that can elevate your life. Emotional maturity is the result of genuinely activating your self-love.
