It’s so ingeniously easy to have a Draw-Off-Drawing-Duel. Invite someone and then grab a pencil or pen and a sketch book, sit across from them or FaceTime them and then look into their eyes and say “‘Draw, pardner!” 🤠✍️.
And then draw your partner as they draw you.
You can take five minutes or fifteen or fifty. And as long as you own a pencil you don’t even have to be an artist.
There’s no finer way to get to know someone than by staring at them, drawing them & being drawn in return.
Plus you get better at drawing people!

It all started when I met the ever-amazing-artist Samantha Dion Baker with my friend Ruth and we all drew each other. The crazy thing was that even though Ruth and I have drawn each other so many times (we’re in a drawing club together) we’ve always drawn each other from the side.
But on that day, we were both drawing each other … AT THE SAME TIME … FACING EACH OTHER … STARING INTO EACH OTHER EYES
It was super intense … but super cool
It was a Close Encounter of the Art Kind!
When Ruth threw a drawing party out in Ridgewood Queens and Nicolas (another guy in our drawing club) was there, we both shouted at each other, “We need to have a drawing duel, right now!”
Nicolas and I screeched our chairs around to face each other and we flung out our sketchbooks and drew each other’s faces like we were two pen-slingers from the Wild West.
Fortunately (since it wasn’t that kind of duel) no one died. It was the kind of duel where both Nicolas and I won ‘cause we not only stared at each other but we drew each other and got drawn. Thank you Nicolas you’re so cool and and fun to Draw-Duel with
After that, I was like, “Drawing Duels are the best thing since flintlock pistols (sorry I had to make that joke) and I need more!”
So I wrote a somewhat cryptic Instagram note …
A couple people volunteered from the Instagram note. One of them was my friend Roscoe. (Ahem… I’m still waiting for you 😆 Charlotte Hamilton )
A day later, Roscoe Betsill and I met for our Draw-Off-Drawing-Duel on a bench in Madison Square Park. Once we got situated we broke out our drawing stuff, said “Draw Pardner,” and drew each other like our lives depended on it.
It was cool to stare into Roscoe’s eyes and instead of feeling all awkward, I felt like an artist would feel if he or she was studying a person’s face to learn what was remarkable about it.
