Ono no Komachi is one of the most famous writers from Heian-era Japan (794AD to 1185AD). Very little is known about her that hasn’t been filtered through other people’s imaginations. She probably lived in the ninth century, she was probably one person rather than several (though even this has been disputed) and her scandalous life is a popular subject for early Noh theatre.
