This was my third time to Rome. The first was in 2006, the last in 2018. I lived in Italy for eight months during my junior year of college, and it’s been one of those places that’s been close to my heart ever since. Coming back after all those years, with a partner and a 15-month-old, felt like a completely different kind of trip, and honestly, a better one.
Since it wasn’t my, or Asse’s, first time to this vibrant city, we were able to skip some of the touristy sites (though we still did a few - the Trevi Fountain always takes my breath away) and mainly focus on what I love most about any city: walking, shopping and eating. We based ourselves in Prati, which I cannot recommend enough. It’s so much more chill than some of the more central, heavily touristed areas, with amazing restaurants and still easy to walk everywhere. If you’re looking for a neighborhood that feels like you’re living in Rome rather than visiting it, Prati is the one.
This was also our first family vacation with Tedros, and I have to say: Italy is incredibly baby friendly. Like, shockingly so. Every restaurant had a high chair ready, strangers on the street were constantly stopping to say hello to him, and the general attitude toward kids is just so warm and accommodating. I was worried about navigating the streets with a stroller, but honestly we didn’t have any problems. They even have a family line at customs and airport security so you never have to wait. If you’re traveling with a little one and wondering where to go, Italy should be at the top of your list.
