Back in May, a reader requested this → home organization systems that are beautiful while still functional, as so many are plastic and terrible.

When it comes to home organization products (or storage), most of us treat it as a utility purchase, not a decor purchase, which makes sense. In other words, you end up buying solely on function and price. You probably opt for a clear plastic bin from the Container Store, which does the job it’s supposed to do. And that’s fine, if you’re tucking it behind closed doors. But meanwhile, the $30-$60 you just spent could go toward something that stores your “stuff” and looks intentional sitting out.
For items tucked behind a closet or cabinet door, under a bed, or inside a drawer, always save. Don’t worry about it being pretty. But if the item (a) lives on an open shelf, a countertop, or in the middle of the room, or (b) is something you touch/use every day, allow yourself to spend.
This will be an ongoing series, with a room-by-room guide on where to spend and where to save. Plus, the home organization items I personally own, my clients have purchased, or I would tell my clients to buy.
The best advice I can give you (for these spaces) is to USE. YOUR. WALLS.
Think about what happens the moment you walk into your home: you’re likely holding mail, maybe a dog leash, car keys, a purse, coffee, and the list goes on.
Other organizational wall items that would work well are rounded up below.
Ceramic Wall Hooks — Pretty and practical. My client just purchased these hooks from Etsy for her own mudroom. Plus, you can customize them!
Shelf and Coat Rack — That same client also purchased this scalloped shelf that I’ve been drooling over since I first laid eyes on it. Available in two finishes and two sizes.
Wall Mirror with Tray — As shown on the website, this would be perfect for an entryway, placed over a console table. With a small tray (for keys, wallets, etc.) and a mirror for a quick check before you head out, what’s not to love? Available in multiple finishes.
Wall Panel — With five-star reviews, this option comes with two shelves and multiple coat racks, PLUS fluted details. Available in natural oak or smoked oak. To me, this one’s worth every penny. There’s also a bench you can pair with it.
Save here (although there are exceptions, see item #2).
Under-bed storage and closet bins are the one category where “hidden” is actually fine because no one’s judging what’s under your bed. Buy the plain canvas or fabric bins, and put your money toward the entryway and/or mudroom instead.

Under-bed Zippered Storage — Extremely affordable, which I love. But my favorite feature? There’s a built-in label holder, so you know exactly what’s in the bag. I highly recommend it if you have limited closet space and need to store various clothing items from season to season. It’s available in multiple sizes and also in the natural color.
Scallop Rattan Under-bed Storage — A super cute find for the young one in your life and great for toy storage. However, it’s not cheap but I do really appreciate the scallop detail.
3 Drawer Organizer — Target for the win! I can see this being used in a closet, in a variety of ways: for clothing, toys, towels, pet supplies, home cleaning supplies — it’s just so versatile. It also has 5 star reviews and is less than $100. There’s also a larger 4 drawer version here.
Hanging Shoe Storage — I think there’s a misconception that just because an item is sold in the dorm, teen, or kids category at a retailer, that we adults are not allowed to purchase it. But the truth is, some of the best space saving, home organizational finds can be found here! Like this vertical shoe organizer that hooks onto your closet rod.
