When a Bad Day Makes You Question Your Whole Life

Once in a while, I come across an expat at the soda, at the beach or sitting on a park bench in downtown San Jose who starts complaining about everything. Here they are in the middle of paradise and they find something to bitch about. I think they should have stayed in bed that particular day. .

There is a question I think every expat in Costa Rica needs to ask themselves at some point: Are you actually unhappy with Costa Rica… or are you just having a bad day?

Because there is a difference.

We arrive here carrying expectations. We imagine the warm beaches, the cold cerveza, the mountains, the wildlife, the slower pace, the friendly people and that magical little phrase, Pura Vida. We think moving to Costa Rica is going to change our lives. And sometimes it does. But then reality shows up.

The bank takes longer than you expected. Immigration wants another document. It rains when you wanted sunshine. Your car needs repairs. Your favorite restaurant isn’t what it used to be. You miss your kids. You have a lousy day. You feel lonely. You wonder if you made a mistake.

And suddenly, you find yourself saying, “Maybe Costa Rica isn’t for me.”

But wait.

Maybe Costa Rica isn’t the problem.

Maybe you’re tired. Maybe you’re homesick. Maybe you’re struggling to build a new circle of friends. Maybe you’re dealing with something inside yourself that you thought moving here would magically fix.

Costa Rica can give you a different environment, but it can’t give you a different heart.

I’ve learned that you can move 2,000 miles away and still bring the same frustrations, fears, habits and expectations with you.

Sometimes the answer isn’t another plane ticket.

Sometimes you simply need to breathe, step outside, watch the sunset, have a cup of coffee and remember why you came here in the first place.

Maybe you’re not unhappy with Costa Rica.

Maybe you’re just having a bad day.

And tomorrow might look completely different.
