William Licht · Costa Rica Good News Report

I have always been an outdoors kind of person. Growing up in Lubbock, my dad and I spent a lot of time hiking through the flatlands of West Texas. There was something special about getting outside with him, walking for hours, talking about life, and simply enjoying being away from everything. We also spent time camping in New Mexico, high in the mountains, surrounded by pine trees, fresh air, and views that seemed to go on forever. Those experiences stayed with me, and I think they helped shape the person I am today.

Now I live close to San Isidro in Costa Rica, and in many ways, I feel like my love for the outdoors has come full circle. My girlfriend and I make the journey to Cerro Chirripó, the highest peak in Costa Rica, about four times a year. It is not an easy trip. It is a strenuous trek, and we usually spend about a week hiking and camping along the way. But that is exactly what I love about it. The challenge, the beauty, the cool mountain air, the incredible scenery, and the feeling of reaching places that most people will never see all make it worthwhile.

I still go back to the United States from time to time, and I will always appreciate where I came from. But when people ask me where home is now, I no longer hesitate. I say, “Costa Rica.” I came here looking for something different, but somehow, I found a place that feels like it was waiting for me. The mountains, the people, the adventure, and the Pura Vida lifestyle have become part of my life. I am so glad I found this place. So happy for them!
