Did you sip your first cup of coffee today feeling a little uninspired? Maybe you stared at the ceiling and wondered, “What am I doing here?” You may be questioning what you’ve accomplished, whether you’ve made a difference, or whether your grandest contribution to humanity has been remembering to put the trash out on Tuesday. Maybe you’re even asking yourself that ugly little question: “Am I a failure?”
Well, let me tell you something. Before you start writing your own obituary and giving yourself one star on Yelp, you may want to consider something important: You have absolutely no idea how much you may have meant to someone else.
Maybe it was the stranger you smiled at when they desperately needed to feel noticed. Maybe it was the friend who still remembers the advice you gave them twenty years ago. Maybe you helped someone through a difficult time and never realized your few words kept them from giving up. Perhaps your children, your friends, your family, a coworker, or even someone you barely remember still carries a piece of something you gave them.
The problem is, most of us measure success by money, awards, titles, houses, followers, and how many people “like” our latest Facebook post. But life isn’t always measured that way. Sometimes your greatest accomplishment was simply showing up when someone needed you. Sometimes your kindness created a ripple that traveled farther than you will ever know.
So, are you a failure? Probably not. You’re more likely just tired, a little frustrated, and possibly overdue for coffee.
Remember this: Your importance cannot always be measured by what you see in the mirror. Sometimes, it is best measured by the difference you made in someone else’s life when you weren’t even paying attention.
And that, my friends, is a pretty darn good reason to get up tomorrow and give life another shot.
