I sometimes wonder what goes through the minds of people who feel absolutely NO GRATITUDE for what they have. They wake up in the morning and immediately begin thinking about what is wrong. “My bed is uncomfortable. I hate this house. I don’t have enough money. I wish I had a better job. I wish I looked younger. I wish my car was newer. I wish I had what THEY have.” And before their feet even hit the floor, they have already decided that life has cheated them.

Then comes the coffee. “This coffee is terrible.” The traffic. “Why is everybody in my way?” The weather. “It’s too hot. It’s too cold. It’s raining. It’s not raining.” Work. “My boss is impossible.” Home. “This place is too small.” Social media. “Look at that person. Their life is better than mine.” And on and on and on.

The strange thing is that many people who believe they have nothing to be grateful for have things they once dreamed of having. They have food. A home. A car. A job. Friends. Family. Health. Freedom. Another sunrise. But they are so busy staring at what is missing that they never notice what is already there.

That is the danger of living without gratitude. Nothing will ever be enough. You can get the bigger house, the better car, the higher-paying job, and the fancy vacation, but if your mind is programmed to focus on what is missing, you will always find something else to complain about.

And think about the deep affect that these dark souls have on YOUR life. . toxic, wasteful, deteriorating joy. . get rid of all of them.

Remember that gratitude is not a to-do list. You do not have to wake up and force yourself to write down ten reasons to be thankful before you have even had your first cup of coffee. Sometimes you simply need to stop complaining long enough to look around. You might discover that the life you keep criticizing is the very life you once prayed for. And that, my friends, is something worth thinking about. Preferably after coffee.
