Conversation on Race with Denise Takakjy, PhD

Another great conversation in the books, this time with liberation counselor Denise Takakjy PhD. We talked about her evolution of race consciousness. She began by not thinking about race at all, even while in close proximity to the MOVE bombing. She opened the door of curiosity about race in her master’s program and was eventually confronted on social media by a Black colleague. After reflection she chose to educate herself about racialized experiences by reading Black authors. That led to Denise transforming the way she approaches her counseling practice to focus on liberation rather than coping. It was a wonderful exchange of ideas and experiences.
