Esther Roth · From the Wildwoods

Now as [Jesus] drew near, He saw [Jerusalem] and wept over it. (Luke 19:41)

O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the one who kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to her! How often I wanted to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, but you were not willing! (Matthew 23:37)

For the serpent’s trail of brokenness,
the bloody rock that kills a brother,
the hate with which they hate each other,
the fist in rage hurled at the sky,
the thistle’s prick, an anguished cry—
the pride that mocks God’s perfect plan,
the trust placed in a sinful man—
for bonds and chains we pine:
Why have you brought us here to die?
For the hardened hearts, the dried-out bones,
the constant unbelieving groans—
we have no God, we need not one,
we live as each one pleases;
we have no sin, nor shackles—No,
we have no need of Jesus.
For the broken, for the pain,
for unbelief and cruel hate,
for the hell they see not yet—
for all of this
Jesus wept.
