My attempt at coordinating sheep and gritstone on Kinder Low during an evening run this month. I usually set off from home in Edale but this time I took the train to New Mills Central and ran along the Sett Valley trail to Hayfield. It was a good warmup before heading steeply onto the Kinder plateau. The midges kept me moving as they swarmed into my mouth and eyes!
Armed with his camera and accompanied by Ralph, his faithful canine companion, Matt explores the contrasting scenes the Peak District offers. He shares a tip for budding photographers looking to encapsulate the beauty of places like Kinder Scout: “You can actually show more by capturing less. So, focusing in on the things that make this landscape unique.”

Edale to Kinder Gates - Walk 12 (page 69)
It’s a great month to see the heather in bloom in the Dark Peak. This route will give you a true Kinder experience, I can’t promise your feet will stay dry!
This route follows a good path along the start of the Pennine Way up Jacob’s Ladder to Edale Rocks, then continues to Kinder Low trig point and the head of Kinder Downfall. It then follows a short section of Kinder River into the moorland plateau, characterised by peat groughs and likely boggy conditions underfoot.
After visiting the impressive giant boulders of Kinder Gates along the river, it heads to the top of Crowden Brook on the southern rim of the plateau along a vague path across the plateau where you’re going to need compass skills to navigate. It then works its way clumsily down Crowden Clough before returning to Edale village via gentler open pasture.
