Cold wind pierced my skin, quickened my steps up Kinder Scout. Sun tucked behind clouds, slow to rise. Hazy mist in the Hope Valley, hilltops of the Great Ridge silhouetted. Steady morning run, bettered by light and the warmth it brought.
“It’s really important that I get outside, out of the fluorescent lights, out of my uniform, and chase my own dreams and chase my own wants and desires outside of the career that I love so much.”
We recorded Sarah’s interview in two parts as it was very cold and windy on Grindslow Knoll, retreating to my home to warm ourselves by the fire. It’s an inspiring story about seeking adventure and solitude around work and family life.
In part one you'll listen to Sarah talking about her first wildcamp on Kinder Scout and why she leaves the comfort of her family home to go out alone in nature to spend a night on a local hill or mountain.
In part two, Sarah shares why she started her YouTube channel - which beautifully documents her wildcamping trips, how she learned navigation skills and finally, what makes her Wild About Kinder.

Edale Country Day and Fell Race - Edale Country Day is back for 2025! The show will be on Sunday 8th June from 10.30am to 4.30pm. It is held on the playing field next to the public car park in the village.
Oller Brook & The Nab - Walk 3 (page 11) from Mountain Walks Kinder Scout
This route is especially enjoyable if you want to see some wildlife, which you’ll most likely see in the early morning. You might hear a ring ouzel, see stonechats flitting about in the reeds, and watch a mountain hare sneak back into the heather brash.
If you’re walking with a dog, please remember to keep them on a short lead at all times. This is to prevent disturbance to wildlife, including ground nesting birds, and sheep.
Although this is a relatively short walk, the rewards are high! In good weather there are definitely some great spots for panorama shots and a picnic. My book describes the route in close detail, provides a high quality map and you can download the gpx file to your phone. There’s also information about parking and local facilities.
