Celine has just climbed five places to number 15 on Lyst’s Hottest Brands Index, with searches up 31% in a single quarter. Rather than coming as a surprise, the ranking confirms the buzz that’s surrounded the brand for the better part of a year.

Under Michael Rider, the house has found a new direction that’s catapulted it into the spotlight in a way that’s reminding of the early Phoebe Philo days. It’s on every industry insider’s lips, and it’s becoming the signal of a certain kind of fashion taste that’s somewhere between French and American, between polished curation and throwing something on as you head to work. Especially when work is a creative job, or when you’re simply someone with good style.

What’s even more interesting is how Celine got here. At a moment when every brand is betting big on storytelling and world-building - goals that are as important as sometimes they’re fluffy and abstract - Celine’s entire success comes from what the French house has always done best: product.

Rider’s CV reads almost like a contradiction. He designed under Phoebe Philo, Celine’s supreme goddess, then spent six years at Ralph Lauren, a diametrically opposed brand built on preppy American fantasy. That range is what enables him to bring to the brand a perspective that both feels true to the house’s history and fresh and relevant today. His idea style is one that’s easy to buy into, grounded in how people actually dress, then elevating and pushed somewhere more interesting.

There are no theatrics here, no moment engineered to go viral. Only clothes people want to wear for the oldest reason there is: they speak to how someone wants to look, without campaigns or celebrities telling them so. It’s refreshing and way harder to pull off than it sounds. But when executed well, it really works - as the Lyst numbers prove, and as your coolest friend’s sudden Celine obsession also does.
