TL;DR
Fantasy can enrich human life, relieve tension, and deepen intimacy. Fantasy can also become psychic quicksand when it drifts away from human possibility or detaches entirely from reciprocal human relationships. Some people become so psychologically invested in impossible or profoundly isolating sexual activity that they lose contact with embodied reality, meaningful connection, and developmental growth. Clinical work sometimes reveals people whose erotic life does not point towards relationship, mutuality, or human contact at all, but instead toward repetition, abstraction, or impossible transformations. The tragedy is not merely the fantasy enactments themselves. The tragedy is how stubbornly such fantasies can resist change, even when they appear to deepen suffering and isolation over months, years, or decades.
