One evening last year, when indulging in my favourite fabric doomscrolling at Merchant and Mills, I came across a very beautiful fabric. It was brushed dark navy and natural check made of organic cotton and yak with the wonderful name ‘Inky.’ It was love at first sight and I immediately ordered a length with visions of a huge, soft and super warm skirt for the winter.
The fabric arrived and was everything I hoped it would be. Even Jgs no.3 was so taken with it that I offered to get some more and make him a shirt for Christmas. As tends to be the way at Whistlebare, I managed the first half, buying the fabric, but failed to progress beyond there. I wrapped the fabric and put it under the tree, complete with pretty bow, and the promise of sewing the shirt after Christmas.
June is ‘after Christmas’ and so a perfectly reasonable time to be sewing my son a winter shirt. I have made Modern Sewing Company’s Unisex Shirt, which I have made before, and know to be an excellent pattern with proper collar, cuffs and plackets etc. I also know that the pattern tends to come up a bit smaller than I expect and so I really can’t explain how I came to make it at least two sizes too small!
Strangely it fits me quite well which is a very good thing as it would be so sad to have made a beautiful shirt, out of fabulous fabric, and for it not to fit any of us. So far though, Jgs no.3 is not seeing it that way and thinks that I should make him another, larger shirt using my original piece of Inky that is yet to become a skirt. He is going to be spending the next year at University in Canada and so probably does need some warm clothes but I’m still dreaming of my glorious skirt!
Optimistically I checked the Merchant and Mills website but sadly, as expected, Inky is out of stock. Inky however has a fabulous dark green and natural check friend called Cosmo. I think boy number 3 would look like a very dashing lumberjack in Cosmo. He thinks that Cosmo would suit me better but all my social media feeds are currently full of ‘co-ords’ so a matching shirt and skirt would catapult me, at least momentarily, to fashionista status! Surely that would make me slightly less embarrassing and so worth a small colour compromise? What do you think?
