A major wetlands restoration project is underway in west Wirral with 24 hectares of grazing marsh set to be transformed through a partnership between Wirral Council and Cheshire Wildlife Trust.

Funded by the Environment Agency’s Natural Flood Management Programme, the project aims to boost biodiversity while reducing flood risk through the restoration of natural habitats. Read more.

Access to West Kirby’s waste and recycling centre could be restricted under new proposals.

Merseyside Recycling and Waste Authority (MRWA) is asking for views on four potential changes across all of its sites. Read more.

Hundreds of people turned out to support Hoylake and West Kirby RNLI at their recent annual Meet and Greet Day.

The event, on Saturday 25 July, helped to raise almost £3,500 for the lifesaving charity, with more donations to follow. Read more.

Birkenhead School is celebrating another excellent set of GCSE results, with well over half of all grades awarded at the highest levels of 9–7.

The results reflect the hard work, determination and commitment of Birkenhead School’s pupils, alongside the dedication of their teachers and the support of their families. Students have achieved an impressive range of results across the curriculum, providing an excellent foundation for the next stage of their education.

Tom Whitworth, Head of Seniors at Birkenhead School, said: “We are incredibly proud of our students and the results they have achieved.

“These grades are a testament to their commitment and resilience, as well as to the exceptional teaching and support they have received throughout their time at the School.

“To have well over half of all grades at 9–7, with 14% at Grade 9, is a fantastic achievement. More importantly, these results have given our students a strong platform from which to progress confidently into Sixth Form and beyond.”

The successful cohort will now begin the next chapter of their education, with most students progressing to Sixth Form study at Birkenhead School and preparing for A Levels and their future university and career pathways.

Destinations this year included some of the most competitive course and institutions, including Economics at Warwick and Degree Apprenticeships to KPMG and RSM.

Birkenhead School’s Sixth Form continues to offer an ambitious academic environment, combining high expectations with individual support and a broad range of opportunities beyond the classroom. 76% of all grades in 2026 were grades A*-B.

Places remain available for external students wishing to join Birkenhead School’s Sixth Form.

As the highest-performing Sixth Form on the Wirral, the School provides an attractive option for students from other schools who are looking for a challenging and supportive environment in which to achieve their full potential.

Their next Sixth Form Open Evening takes place on Thursday 1st October 2026 at 6pm.

Mr Whitworth added: “Our GCSE results are a wonderful reflection of what our students can achieve when they are challenged, supported and encouraged to aim high.

“We are delighted to welcome our Year 11 students into the Sixth Form, and we would also encourage students from other schools who are considering their next steps to get in touch with us.”

• Four artists celebrate the domestic, and the beauty of the world in our homes and gardens in a new exhibition at The LAKE Gallery on Grange Road in West Kirby. There are new paintings by Clare Flinn and Anna Clark, alongside selected works by Welsh artists Pete Monaghan and Maggie Brown. The exhibition is on until 19 September and the gallery is open Thurs – Sat, 11am – 4pm.
