Greetings from Bizarro Studios North, where we’re sheltering in place while the area is under both a heat advisory and an air quality alert. We’re trying to keep to our usual schedule, which includes sharing the week’s cartoons on the WaynoBlog.
According to the drawing board, it’s now October, so while we’ll melt if we go outside, I’m in the studio thinking of autumnal gags. I drew cattle, military personnel, a sea captain, and other cartoon protagonists.
This enigmatic pairing is clipped from an upcoming panel. It will make sense in context, I promise.
Our first throwback image is art for a coloring book published by the Pittsburgh City Paper in 2020. The character’s guitar case is decorated with the logos of bygone Pittsburgh music venues.
Peeking even further into the past, we have a collaged postcard sent in 1986 when I subscribed to DOO DAH, a now-defunct fanzine dedicated to the Bonzo Dog Band. DOO DAH’s editor shared the postcard image the other day. I had no memory of making this odd piece of mail art, but I recognize it as my work.
Friday’s subway platform gag works in the strip layout, and feels more like an underground tunnel than the vertical panel.
