By George Henry Boughton (Anglo-American; 1833 – 1905)

Psychological and spiritual articles, courses and general content aimed for women love rage. Be it the ‘Dianic spirituality’ with its roots in the mid-century, or the more secular, activist and feminist approaches, there is a perspective on rage as the crucial element of female expression and a pathway towards liberation. You have probably seen articles about Lilith, Kali or another fierce feminine entity or read a slogan on a feminist demonstration that tells of ‘female rage’.

Rage is a manifestation of a denied anger. When anger is acknowledged it flows freely and therefore there is no rage. If there is no fear of confrontation and of fight, there is no rage. If there is permission for fierceness in the form of cutting, decaying or destroying, rage will not appear. The orientation towards rage itself suggests that there is a portion of repressed anger and fierceness in the collective feminine experience.

Since it is reactive, it blows up into the other extreme and manifests as a fixation over being ‘loud-mouthed’, ‘threatening’, ‘too much’ and with a lot of identity erected around “I will not dim myself for you” or “You cannot handle me” internal statements. To the extreme, it becomes an impulse towards shouting into everyone’s face while not really saying anything other than making statements about an identity. At worst it traps us inside adolescence. Instead of being truly strong and fierce, you only become unpleasant while anyone with a perception can see the frail, terrified little girl inside, asking to be validated.
