YOU can WIN this Classic Man v. Nature Clash

My commanding officer issued her order at 11:05 p.m.: “Honey, can you get the garbage to the street for tomorrow’s pickup?”

Sounds easy, huh? Not after the Winter Storm of 2026, which stretched roughly 2,000 miles from New Mexico through the Southern Plains, Deep South, and Ohio River Valley into the Northeast and New England.

In Northern Virginia, just south of Washington, D.C., it made my weekly get-out-the-garbage chore a classic Man v. Nature narrative, in which a character (me) must struggle against the forces of the natural world. It’s essentially the ultimate test of human willpower, ingenuity, and survival against an indifferent suburban environment of snow and ice.

To succeed, I would have to lug a giant, green garbage container on wheels, filled to the brim with household debris wrapped in Hefty Ultra Strong Kitchen Drawstring bags.

It would be a precarious downhill journey from my backyard shed. I would have to go 30 yards down a pristine slope to a plowed street. There was no shoveled path to take. The surface was super slick, like an ice rink. The storm had dropped 8 inches of snow, followed by 4 inches of sleet that froze cement-solid, creating what harried government officials on TV were calling “snowcrete.”

This would be a ski slope without skis, pulling a big green container with roughly 15 pounds of garbage.
