However, if you were waiting for permission, this is it. Please don’t wait for it again.

It’s unlikely that when you first decided to be a creative person, your thought was “I want to make safe, digestible art”.

You saw the world of creativity around you, and your initial drive was to add something new to it. The unique, personal flavor that only you can create.

As we begin to play the creative game, we try to learn what rules to play by.

We start by exploring our own tastes, and if we try to make a life out of it, it’s normal to gradually try to adapt to what will appeal to the most people, get you the job, and sync up with trends.

The longer you keep at it, the more signals you receive that encourage you to fit better into the system that promises to give you that creative life you wanted.

If you don’t pay attention, you’ll find yourself in a cycle of creating work that feels digestible and safe for client work, to appease the algorithm, or to mimic people you think are more successful than you.

Sometimes you remember the type of creative work that made you want to become a creator in the first place.

“Nobody else is making this, probably because no one would like it.”

“Are people going to wonder if I’m okay?”

In the short term, these thoughts make it easy to pause. In the long term, you’ll wish you hadn’t.

The creative work that only you can make is probably weird. But that’s exactly what makes it stand apart.

You become less replicable, and more memorable.

And for every person thinking “are they doing okay?” (which they probably aren’t), there will be a lot more people that you encourage to start being creative too.

Your weird art is your creative edge. It’s your best way to become more similar to the creatives you admire.

Mostly, it’s how you learn who you are and what you bring to the world.

Don’t wait for permission to be weird again.
