Accept where you are right now.

Once you’ve been creating for a certain amount of time, you find yourself with an unexpected side effect: Expectation.

In the beginning, it felt logical to believe that the best was still ahead of you because there was nothing behind you.

Once you’ve made a series of works, shared them publicly, and possibly tried to work with or for others, you start to accumulate a score.

“This time it worked”.

“This time it didn’t”.

It’s normal, healthy and important that we have a higher score of things that haven’t worked out.

It means you learned something. It means you tried. It’s a record of the fact that you haven’t quit.

If everything worked out every time, we wouldn’t even be able to tell why without a comparison point.

We tend to look at our score and remember the timeline we imagined for ourselves when we first began creating.

That version of us that had no point of reference for how long things realistically take or how often friction occurs.

Even though we now have the accumulated wisdom to know exactly why we’re in the place we’re at on our creative journey, it’s easy to obsess over the gap between where you expected to be and where you are.

You might even be forgetting that the beginner version of you would have been ecstatic to be in the place where you are now.

Ultimately, we have two choices:

1. Agonize that you aren’t a person that doesn’t exist. *Even the people you compare yourself to have never lived your life.

2. Accept where you are right now and move forward.

Obsessing over the gap has no use to you.

You can’t rely on expectations.

You can rely on consistent steps forward.

Seek momentum and trust that it will take you somewhere new. It may not be the place you were expecting, but it won’t be the place you started from.
