Venetia La Manna · Slowly Does It

Summer dressing has always been my favourite and since I committed to buying fewer and better clothes back in 2017, I’ve found it even more satisfying and far less stressful. Finding your own sense of personal style really is a wonderful way to resist the never-ending trend cycles.

I just got back from holiday and this year, things were a little different. I’m six months’ pregnant so dressing for a changing body and with a bump that grows daily presented a new challenge, but one that I’ve really enjoyed.

Having grown out of all but one of my trousers, I’m trying my very best to prioritise the clothes I already own for my pregnancy, and anything new or ‘new-to-me’ that I do take on, I’m buying it under the proviso that it’s something I’ll wear longterm.

A fun part of my work is that I have built some great relationships with clothing brands that actually care about their supply chains and their impact on the planet. I’m happy to say that this newsletter contains a few of these brands and I’m excited to share them with you, alongside some of my go-to summer dressing tips.

With this said, to me, shopping “ethically” is the smallest, tiniest part of fair fashion. Ethical consumption has never helped end gender based violence in garment factories, nor has it reinstated fired workers at a unionised factory, nor has it prevented VC funded so called “sustainable” brands from being acquired by fast fashion juggernauts.

This is a “yes, and” situation. I shop secondhand and support small, ethical, upcycled brands because I love it and have the privilege to do so, and I am dedicated to supporting grassroots and worker-led movements who are organising to make fashion fair for everyone - not just for “consumers”, but for workers, too.

Right then, let’s get into it!
