Born in Gent on July 2, 1943, Walter Godefroot belonged to a rare caste of champions. He was a man defined by understated dignity, a powerful physical presence, and hands shaped by real-world labor before they ever gripped a set of handlebars. Though history often remembers the era of the late 1960s and 1970s as the exclusive kingdom of Eddy Merckx, Godefroot stood as one of the very few giants who could look the Cannibal in the eye, challenge him in his prime, and force him to bend.
