How many times has design been declared ‘dead’ on X this year? According to a cheeky Figma post, the counter is already at 847 and counting. Every time a new generative tool or agentic AI drops, tech influencers scream that designers are obsolete.
But let us look at the actual data.
A recent Financial Times article highlights a bizarre paradox: agentic AI and coding assistants have triggered an absolute boom in mobile app releases, yet actual user downloads and retention remain completely flat, mirroring overall global mobile app trends.
Why? Because shipping code is no longer the bottleneck - building something people actually give a damn about is. When anyone can prompt a functional app into existence in 30 seconds, the market gets flooded with generic, low-effort junk.
These AI-generated products fail because they lack the core of what Figma reminds us design actually is: experience.
Design is not about drawing pretty buttons; it is about human psychology, problem definition, and crafting an intuitive journey that triggers retention. As the cost of creation drops to zero, the value of curation, taste, and user empathy skyrockets.
AI can generate 10,000 layouts, but it takes a human designer to figure out which one is worth building. We have officially transitioned from the ‘pixel-pushing’ era to the ‘era of taste.’
So, is design dead? Far from it.
