Vocation: “spiritual calling, summons, urging” to a specific activity, “profession”
In my article on the comfort cave of the modern slave plantation, I discuss the fact that 80% of jobs are profit-driven rather than people-driven.
This means that for every 8 out of 10 jobs, these jobs exist solely to help a corporation — a soulless entity that only answers to greed — make more money.
Examples of jobs for such corporations include finance and insurance, information technology, non-essential manufacturing, transportation and warehousing of production, etc.
Only 2 jobs actually are people-driven; meaning their goal is to help people become better.
If these industries exist only to make profits, you must understand why AI is such a benefit.
AI allows corporations to reduce one of their highest expenses: people. If a corporation is a soulless entity only chasing profit, why would it not eliminate people for the benefit of the bottom line?
This is the reality that we are witnessing today and AI is just the most recent trend.
I’ve talked about how corporations did this in the ‘70s, when big business turned its back on the people, and Alex Randall Kittredge has great work on jobs going overseas.
However, all is not lost. You can still use the forces at your disposal to ensure that your humanity shines through.
That is what I look to dive into in the upcoming series.

I recently read a piece called The End of Vocation1. It was a good piece and I was very impressed with how it painted communism as a modern reality with the fact that it’s already here.
I appreciated this perspective because most expect dystopia to look one way, but it can look completely different and most not recognize it.
Interesting that the title of the piece is the ‘End of Vocation’ when Vocation implies a Spiritual Calling. Is this the end of spiritual callings?
The article then went on a journey about how gloomy AI could be. It talked about how it was solving all these problems in record time, how powerful that was, and what that means for humanity.
I found this particularly interesting because all political and technocratic “leaders” have stated: “AI will take over humanity — that is the goal,” but people are still like, “AI is the coolest thing ever.”
Some of these dangers can come through and AI can be a tool of revolution. However, if we these AI leaders implement an image of what their reality is, that vision could be disastrous.
But by addressing it with faith, logic, and rational, we can properly assess the coming trends and use it to our advantages.
I use LLMs and have been for the past three years.
Has it changed my creativity a lot? No. I still take the time to sit, think, and capture all of this.
What sitting and thinking does for me is that it makes me sharper and increases my ability to see more; to see the bigger picture. The bigger problems I solve, the more I grow.
There are quite a few “out of frame” concepts that AI can’t solve for; which include:
Reading the room
Empathy
Human strengths
Of all the ability that AI can do in that article, what stuck out to me as missing is that AI does not create.
AI cannot innovate. AI can only solve problems based on the information that it has. If it’s missing information, it cannot do anything.
But a human can. A human can ideate. A human can create — see additional contexts based on experiences.
AI can simply get humanity all the info it needs, and humanity can then use that information to move forward.
But what has been lost recently is the ability to hone our human strengths.
If you are or will be affected by AI, I want to remind you that you are more than that job that could be replaced by a machine.
That role was solely there to keep you tied up in a job and provide steady income. Since it’s so easily cut, it doesn’t mean that you personally don’t amount to anything.
You’ve forgotten — or maybe never knew — you have skills, values, insights, experience, tools, and characteristics that you can bring to your fellow human, and if you can find out how to bring those attributes forward, you can make a difference in the world — and live successfully.
This is what I’m calling the vocation correction: how we return to true vocation in this world that we find ourselves in.
In the upcoming series of articles, I’ll be asking: how can we strengthen our human spirit? How can we develop those human strengths that technology will never have?

The overwhelming majority of jobs exist to serve corporate profit, not human wellbeing—which is precisely why AI-driven replacement is a feature, not a bug, for these industries.
AI leaders have openly stated their vision. The danger isn’t hidden; it’s ignored. Just as social media’s harms took a decade to be reckoned with, AI’s consequences are already unfolding while people cheer it on.
AI cannot create, innovate, or ideate. It only solves problems from existing information. That gap—creativity, empathy, reading the room—is where human irreplaceability lives.
Your worth was never the job. A role that can be cut so easily was never the measure of what you amount to.
The path forward is the “vocation correction”—reclaiming true vocation by developing the human strengths technology can never replicate.
Take a strengths assessment (StrengthsFinder or a free online equivalent) to identify your individual attributes if you don’t already know them.
Audit your current work: is it profit-driven or people-driven? Understanding which one you’re in reframes how you view potential AI disruption.
Begin separating your identity from your job title. Practice naming the skills, insights, and experiences you carry independent of any role.
Watch for where you’re solving problems AI can’t—reading a room, ideating, creating—and lean deeper into those muscles.
