Today, I'm sharing something deeply personal with you—my recollection of the Great East Japan Earthquake that struck on March 11, 2011. What you'll find here is a video where I simply talk about my experience, unscripted and from the heart.
As a mother on maternity leave with my 10-month-old son, I was in Tokyo's fashionable Omotesando district that afternoon. What started as a special day with friends and our babies quickly transformed into one of Japan's most devastating natural disasters.
In this recording, I walk through my vivid memories: the moment I reached for a glass door and felt the ground begin to undulate, watching electrical cables swing violently overhead, and the long walk home through a transformed cityscape as all public transportation shut down.
I share not just what I witnessed, but how it felt to gradually realize the magnitude of what was happening as tsunami footage began appearing on social media, and later watching the horrifying news unfold on television with my friends.
