Hugo Mbongue: In Search of Opportunity

I’ve known Hugo for a few years now – according to my records, which are admittedly imperfect, we first spoke in April 2022 when he was making waves with TFC II en route to signing with the first team later than year.

I’ve followed his career closely and so it was great to have a chance to catch up with him after the few interesting seasons he’s had away from Toronto FC. That transition from academy football to the professional game is fascinating. If a player makes it to that point they obviously have talent. Then it becomes a case of pairing hard work with the right attitude and finally getting the opportunity to show it.

We chatted a bit about those loan experiences in USL and CPL, that cup run with Vancouver FC in the Canadian Championship, and the opportunity the move to Crown Legacy FC and Charlotte FC offers.

He’s grown a lot over those years. Not so much physically, he was always a big target, but in his confidence and comfort, the clarity with which he expressed himself and what he wanted to achieve.

Needless to say I’ll be keeping an eye on what he achieves this season and beyond.
