Holly Hinton · So What? Just another website rant

There is no escaping AI - unless you’re living in a cave somewhere.

Search results are changing. People are asking ChatGPT instead of Googling the answer. And suddenly everyone’s panicking about whether their website is about to become irrelevant.

“Google still handles 13.7+ billion searches a day. AI is growing fast, but search is still where demand starts.” - Neil Patel

So, can we all calm down a bit and look at what is actually happening?

AI isn’t replacing your website.

But it is exposing the ones that don’t make sense.

AI tools don’t “see” your website the way humans do.

They don’t care about fancy design or how nice it looks, but they do care about clarity, structure and relevance - and I hate to be the bearer of bad news - that’s exactly what SEO’s have been telling people FOR YEARS!!

Nothing has actually changed.

If you’ve been lazily copying and pasting shit from ChatGPT into your website, then you’re not adding to the conversation and providing anything new. So AI won’t reference you.

Simples.

I was asked recently to build a website with content already provided. That sounded great until the copy read:

We exist to build strong, lasting relationships by delivering high quality work, backed by years of expertise and a reliable service clients can trust, on time every time.”

Yeah, so what? Shouldn’t all businesses be doing this?

What does that actually mean? And, more importantly, what bloody industry is this?

Unfortunately, the rest of the copy didn’t get any better…

AI can’t interpret vague, fluffy language any better than a human can.

So when someone asks:

“Who can help me with [specific problem]?”

Those websites don’t show up.

Not because they’re on the wrong platform. Not because they haven’t done SEO.

But because they’ve said… absolutely nothing.

If you want your website to actually work for AI and SEO, focus on:

  • Saying what you actually do in plain English (no jargon), not bland statements like “Reliable delivery. We do what we say we will do, when we say we will do it.”

  • Be specific about who you help - do you work in a specific industry, only B2B, with clients in a certain location? Make sure you spell it out!

  • Clearly explain the problems you solve. It’s no good just saying “We help your business get ahead” - that could mean anything and work for an accountant as well as it could for a coach. An accountant would be better saying “helping you understand your figures to help your business ahead” and a coach could say “personal coaching to help service-based business owners get out of their own head and build a business they adore.”

  • Structure your content so it’s easy to follow. I’ll not go into heading styles and formatting here, but if you write a tonne of content without clear breaks no-one will read it - including AI bots.

If a human can quickly understand your website, AI can too.

AI isn’t here to replace your website - at least not yet!

But it is highlighting whether it ever made sense in the first place. Whether it adds anything of value or is simply another cookie-cutter repeat of everything else already out there.

And that’s an important distinction that business owners need to understand.

If your website feels a bit vague, overcomplicated, or sounds nice but doesn’t say much (you know, if you read it and say “So What?”), now’s the time to fix it.

That’s exactly what I do at Web Goddess - my team and I turn unclear websites into something both humans and AI can actually understand.
