Hello! Over the past weekend a few hundred Anglicans gathered as they always do in July at the University of York for the summer session of the Church of England’s governing assembly, the General Synod. They talked about a lot of stuff, but we’re going to pull out two debates in particular today.
The first concerned — what else — but same-sex relationships. Would the bishops manage to elude the trap set for them by the liberals, or would the synod finally express a view on whether gay sex was sinful or not?
The second attracted no less controversy. A diocese brought a motion urging the church to attend to a series of documents produced by Palestinian Christians, statements which Jewish groups said were inflammatory, inaccurate, divisive, and even antisemitic. Would the C of E take a side in this impossible conflict, and end up betraying either its Palestinian brothers and sisters or its Jewish friends?
