I’ve been working on a new classroom idea and I’d love to know what you think.
It is called Class League.
Triptico is still very much my main focus, but this is an idea I’ve wanted to revisit for a long time.
During my time as an English teacher, one of the most successful things I ever did was run a fantasy football league with my students.
But it had a twist.
Students did not simply pick a team and wait for real football results. Their own effort, homework, behaviour and participation had a direct impact on how their team performed.
It was incredibly motivating.
I still remember students who rarely completed homework suddenly printing out three copies, keeping them in different places and making absolutely sure it was handed in, because they did not want to lose points for their team!
It was very time-consuming to manage.
I was using real football data, updating spreadsheets, adding points to student teams and trying to keep everything running alongside normal teaching.
It also depended on the football season. No fixtures meant nothing to update.
I’ve rebuilt the idea from scratch.
Rather than using real clubs and players, which would create licensing issues and limit the idea to the football season, Class League has its own imaginary world of clubs and players.
It also has a match engine that the teacher can run whenever they want.
A matchday can happen at the end of a lesson, once a week or whenever suits the class. Results are simulated automatically, player points are calculated, the league table updates and the top managers can be celebrated.
The teacher can also award or deduct points at any time for classroom effort, homework, participation, teamwork, behaviour and progress.
In other words:
Students manage their team. Their classroom effort shapes the season.
