On 8th July 2026, Amnesty International UK published a report "A Growing Threat: The Anti-Rights Movement in the UK".

The report labelled a large number of UK organisations as "anti-rights" for opposing Amnesty's position on sex and gender identity.

The report portrayed these organisations as threats to human rights, despite their stated focus on issues such as defending sex-based rights, protecting single-sex spaces, upholding safeguarding protections, lesbian and gay rights, supporting Christian beliefs, or advocating pro-life positions.

The report sparked swift backlash and many of the organisations named responded with formal letters of challenge demanding apologies and retractions.

Amnesty sent a generic response to early writers and temporarily removed the report from its website to complete an “internal review”, before removing it completely.

In the following week, a second Amnesty report, published in May and titled Like a Snowball: The Growth and Impact of the Gender Critical Movement in the UK, also came under scrutiny.

On 16th July 2026, it was confirmed that Amnesty had referred itself to the Charity Commission by submitting a serious incident report. At the time of writing, no formal investigation has been launched.

On 31st July 2026, Amnesty International UK published an apology for A Growing Threat briefing on their website and also emailed an apology to activists. Both reports, “A Growing Threat” and “Like a Snowball”, have now been removed.
