Earlier this month John Sayers senior, and his son John, were acquitted of causing grievous bodily harm by a jury at the Old Bailey, which had been given the case after it was transferred from Newcastle Crown Court.
I first heard about the case when I was in court for a very interesting pre-trial hearing in November last year and it was then I made the connection with the so-called Tup Tup Palace murder trial, which is notorious on Tyneside.
So today’s Substack is set in Newcastle, and looks at this legendary character in the Geordie underworld and why he has got so many enemies in the North East.
