It is about being forced to live always and forever on the edge of humiliation. A public statement that you are a problem, that you are not to be trusted, that you are unworthy of being accepted into a society that does not believe in your right to be who you are.
Just understand that this is our fault, not yours, and we must apologize for the disgraceful way you are treated. You did nothing to deserve our enmity, our hostility. Your being considered as something less than us has nothing to do with you and everything to do with us.
You are not the disappointment, we are. We are a society that is cruel because it can be, heartless because it is easy, dismissive because it somehow makes us feel superior.
I am sorry. You deserve so much more, so much better than this from us. I can only hope we do something one day, even though you have no reason to expect that this will occur, to allow you to forgive us our terrible transgressions.
