A Letter to the Girl I Ghosted

At least…
not the first time.

The first time, it wasn’t silence by choice.
It was absence by accident.

My phone was gone.
Stolen, like time tends to be when you’re not paying attention.

And you…
you were the last person I spoke to.

The last message sitting there
like a door I thought was still open.

So when I came back
when I finally held a new screen, a new number,
a new way to reach you

I waited.

Because in my mind,
you were still mid-conversation.

You just hadn’t replied yet.

What I didn’t know then
is that you were doing the same thing.

Waiting.

Two people,
both convinced the other one would speak first.

Both thinking silence meant something
it didn’t.

And that’s the strange thing about timing.

It doesn’t always break things loudly.

Sometimes it just… pauses them
long enough for life to walk in
and rearrange everything.

Because by the time we found our way back
to that unfinished sentence

we were different.

Not in dramatic ways.
Just enough.

Enough to have met other people.
Enough to have started healing things
we hadn’t even told each other about.

Enough to make “us” feel like something
that almost happened
instead of something that still could.

But even then

you felt like ease.

Like conversations that didn’t need direction.
Six hours turning into seven
without either of us noticing.

You spoke,
and I listened like it mattered.

I spoke,
and you held it like it was something fragile.

There was something safe about you.

Not loud.
Not overwhelming.

Just… certain.

And maybe that’s what made it dangerous.

Because I’ve learned something about myself—
I don’t always run from chaos.

Sometimes,
I run from calm.

When you said you were thinking about me—
not casually,
not out of boredom,
but intentionally

I felt it.

When you said you wanted to try
us

I didn’t hesitate out loud.

I said yes.

But there are things you say yes to
with your voice…

and hesitate to accept
with your spirit.

Because the moment I agreed,
something in me stepped back.

Not away from you
but away from what it meant.

From the weight of something real.
From the possibility that this time
it might not fall apart for familiar reasons.

We greeted each other again.

Softly.
Carefully.

Like people pretending
they hadn’t already seen each other deeply.

And then

I slowed down.

Not suddenly.
Not enough to be obvious.

Just enough
to create distance without naming it.

And that’s the part I’ve been trying to understand.

Was it fear?

Or was it recognition?

Because there’s a difference between
not being ready…

and realizing something matters enough
to change you.

You deserved clarity.

But I gave you space instead
the kind that feels like silence
when you didn’t ask for it.

And I think that’s what ghosting really is.

Not always disappearance.

Sometimes it’s hesitation stretched too long.
Unspoken thoughts turning into distance.
A quiet retreat
from something that required you
to show up fully.

I didn’t vanish.

I just…
didn’t arrive.

And maybe that hurt more.

Because it leaves room for questions.

Room for you to wonder
if you imagined it.
If it meant as much as it felt.
If you were the only one who saw something real.

You weren’t.

I did too.

That’s the truth hidden in all of this.

You were not almost something.

You were something
I didn’t know how to step into.

And that’s harder to admit
than simply saying I left.

Because leaving is clean.

But this…

this was quiet.

Complicated.

Honest in a way
that doesn’t sound good out loud.

I didn’t ghost you
because you weren’t enough.

I ghosted you
because something about you
felt like it could be.

And I wasn’t sure
what version of me
would have to exist
to meet you there.

So if this ever felt like silence…

it wasn’t emptiness.

It was noise
I didn’t know how to translate.

And maybe that’s the real ending here.

Not that we didn’t work.

But that we happened
at the edge of who I was…

and I didn’t step forward.

Maybe in a different life we could have worked out…
