From tactical brilliance to strategic insanity

Here's a domino chain, ranked by how much each one causes the ones below it:

1. The disposition: treating military dominance as a substitute for political settlement. This sets up the whole board. Every domino below is it, falling.

2. The settlement enterprise and the refusal of statehood. The disposition applied to land: facts on the ground that foreclose Israel's own political exit, leaving force as the only remaining instrument.

3. Governing the Palestinians by force and division. With politics foreclosed, Israel manages them by splitting and striking: fermenting Yassin's Islamism in Gaza against the secular nationalists, invading Lebanon in 1982 against the PLO. This is the domino that manufactures the enemies: Hamas and Hezbollah.

4. Losing Turkey. The early collateral casualty of government-by-force: Cast Lead and the 2010 flotilla raid shed the one irreplaceable Muslim partner more than a decade before October 7, then Syria hardened it. Proof the posture was already shedding strategic assets long before the catastrophe.

5. October 7. The incubated enemy detonates the deterrence illusion. The movement Israel helped raise, then believed it had bought and tamed, strikes on the assumption of #3.

6. The visible cruelty: Gaza and now the West Bank. This is the hinge domino: the maiming, the kneecapping pattern, the deliberate crippling that fills wards with permanent disability rather than graves: the starvation, the mass civilian death, and now settler pogroms in the West Bank that even Israeli commanders have called pogroms. Militarily these look like operations; strategically they are the domino that demolishes global respectability. They strip the "most moral army / villa in the jungle" narrative that was Israel's actual soft-power capital, and with it the moral license the Western alliance was sold on.

7. Dragging the United States into the unwinnable Iran war. The overreach that spends the patron, and note where it falls in the chain: it asks Washington to pay more ($113 billion and counting, no exit) at exactly the moment #6 is destroying the legitimacy that made paying defensible. The bill arrives as the justification for it collapses.

The thing the cascade makes visible: the chain doesn't run from worst to least: it runs from a disposition at the top that keeps the dominoes falling, down to consequences that grow more strategically lethal the later they land. The two newest dominoes, the visible cruelty and the pogroms, are late and severe at once because legitimacy is the substrate everything else rests on. Strip it, and #7 becomes unpayable, the patron relationship in #1's shadow becomes unsustainable, and the whole structure that let Israel absorb its earlier blunders stops holding. That's why the cruelty sits at the point where tactical success converts into strategic self-destruction.
