i’ve spent almost 20 years working in food in many different capacities. i started as a food stylist in television, worked with kids in schools for years with Jamie Oliver on the Food Revolution, and somehow managed to write books, articles, and often TV segments about how to feed yourself and your family well.
one of the biggest questions i’m asked out in the world, especially since my book, this is what i eat, was published, is: how do i get my kids to try xxxxx? how do i get them to eat healthier? You are in charge. You are the adult in the room. you get to decide what is purchased and eaten in your home.
and then there’s the after-school dilemma: what snacks do i feed my kids after school that will actually keep them satiated until dinner?
your kids arrive home RAVENOUS. so instead of letting them fill up on a bunch of pre-packaged trader joes snacks and then hoping they’ll magically be hungry again for a nutritious dinner two hours later, feed them dinner when they are actually hungry.
protein. vegetables. carbs. a real meal.
then, if they’re hungry again at the traditional american dinner time of 6 or 7 p.m., that is snack time. fruit, veggies, peanut butter pretzels, a fudgesicle or whatever works for your family.
you are simply flipping the order.
IT IS GOING TO CHANGE YOUR LIVES. YOU ARE WELCOME IN ADVANCE.
for my paid subscribers, i’m sharing the perfect sunday meal prep, including quantities, so that when everyone gets home from school, you can mix and match proteins, vegetables, and carbs to make different meals throughout the week without you or your family getting sick of eating the same thing.
i call it my sudoku method, and it’s how i meal prep for my private chef celebrity clients. you do a little bit of thinking and cooking once, and suddenly you have a whole grid of different meals at your fingertips.
and here’s how i always think about food:
if you’re a maserati, do you want to fill it with premium gas so it can run at maximum capacity? or fill it with the lowest grade and hope for the best?
think about your body — and your kids’ bodies — the same way.
