Florida Senate upset. Ossoff strikes a nerve. Trump cancels joint military exercises.

On Tuesday, primary elections were held in Florida, Pennsylvania, Alaska and Wyoming. The big upset of the night was Florida State Representative Angie Nixon, a member of the DSA, who defeated Alex Vindman by 12 points for Florida’s Democratic U.S. Senate nomination, despite Vindman having raised 16 times what she had. In the wake of his loss, Vindman wrote, “Rep. Nixon ran a strong campaign. I will be standing by her side in the fight against Ashley Moody. I hope you’ll join me.” He also donated $400,000 to the Florida Democratic Party to help win races up and down the ballot. In the 48 hours after her victory, Nixon reported raising $1 million, writing, “Now we’re taking that same energy into a general election against a candidate backed by billionaire donors who are terrified of what happens when working people unite. They’ll lie. They’ll spend big. We know it’s coming. Let’s get to work.”

Also on Tuesday, Mary Peltola, the Democratic candidate for U.S. Senate from Alaska, advanced to the November election after winning the nonpartisan open primary, beating Senator Dan Sullivan by more than five points. The top four candidates advance to the November general election. In Pennsylvania, Democrat Brandon Dukes narrowly flipped a Pennsylvania state House seat blue Tuesday night. Pennsylvania’s 12th District voted for Trump by 18 points in 2024. And in Florida, scandal-plagued Rep. Cory Mills, a Trump ally, was ousted in his primary amid a House Ethics Committee investigation into allegations of sexual misconduct and campaign finance violations.
