That went rather well.

Two weeks ago we published a short article explaining how we were able to use our worldwide database of players to project games at the World Championships.

It is Stanley Cup Playoffs time.

Twelve days and 56 games later, the model had predicted the right winner on 50 occasions, or 89% of the time.

Yes, maybe half the games at the WC are David versuas Goliath but still…

We had correclty predicted France to be relegated, but Hungary saved themselves and push Kazaksthan downstairs thanks to a win in their head-to-head.

In Group A, we had the correct order for Canada, Sweden, Finland but Austria beat Latvia for the 4th spot.

In Group B, Switzerland beat the odds and moved first (we had them 3rd), ahead of the USA and the Czech as predicted. There again, Denmark moved ahead of Germany for the 4th thanks to an all or nothing shootout win.

This obviously gives us different quarterfinals. Here are the new ones:

Canada 74% - 26% Denmark

Sweden 58% - 42 % Czechia

USA 65% - 35% Finland

Switzerland 70% - 30% Austria

Canada still being the heavy favorite for the gold medal.
