You Can Tell a Lot About a Man by How He Treats Women

I recently shared my thoughts on the importance of men treating women with respect. While many people agreed, I was stunned by the number of responses arguing that a woman must somehow earn a man’s respect before he is obligated to show it. I wholeheartedly disagree. A man should treat every woman he encounters with the utmost courtesy and respect. However, respect must mean more than opening doors or offering a seat. I’d argue a man’s character is most clearly revealed by how he treats a woman when his own desires might conflict with what’s honorable.

Unfortunately, we live in a culture that often encourages men to take part in behaviors that reduce women to objects of sexual gratification. Pornography has become commonplace and casual romantic relationships are often treated like harmless entertainment. Music and popular culture routinely reduce women to little more than bodies to be conquered and discarded. We shouldn’t be surprised when these attitudes eventually affect how men treat real women.
