To me there is something special about summer reading. Maybe it’s the slower pace of the season or the opportunity to read on a porch swing or beside the water. Whatever the reason, summer is one of the best times of year to pick up a good book.
Unfortunately, a lot of people now spend their down time scrolling endlessly through social media, consuming content they’ll barely remember tomorrow. In my opinion, a great book offers something entirely different. It can challenge the mind, broaden one’s perspective, strengthen character, and even teach us lessons that we’ll remember for the rest of our life.
Summer is an opportunity to slow down and step away from the noise of a busy life. Whether your interests are history, leadership, adventure, or fiction, the right book can make your summer more rewarding. With that in mind, here are ten books that every gentleman should consider reading this summer. These will also make great gifts for the man in your life, so check them out.
By Marcus Aurelius
Written nearly two thousand years ago, Meditations is one of the most influential books ever written on self-discipline, personal responsibility, resilience, and leadership. Although it was never intended to be published for the public, these private reflections of a Roman emperor continue to offer practical wisdom for navigating life’s challenges. Every gentleman should own a copy and revisit it often.
By James Kerr
Few books have influenced my thinking on leadership and creating a winning culture as much as Legacy. Through the example of New Zealand’s legendary All Blacks rugby team, Kerr explores humility, accountability, discipline, teamwork, and the pursuit of excellence. The lessons extend far beyond sports and apply equally to leadership in business, family, and everyday life.
By Harold G. Moore and Joseph L. Galloway
Few books capture the realities of leadership, courage, and sacrifice as powerfully as We Were Soldiers Once... and Young. As a former Army officer, this is one of those books that heavily influenced my leadership style and my personal life. Written by Lieutenant General Hal Moore and journalist Joseph Galloway, the book recounts the Battle of Ia Drang during the Vietnam War. It was the first major engagement between American and North Vietnamese forces.
More than just military history, it’s a study of leadership under the most difficult circumstances imaginable. Moore’s commitment to his soldiers and his calm decision-making under pressure offer lessons that extend far beyond the battlefield. It’s a powerful reminder that true leadership is really about service and sacrifice.
By Daniel James Brown
This remarkable true story follows the University of Washington rowing team as they pursue Olympic gold during the Great Depression. It’s a powerful lesson in perseverance, teamwork, sacrifice, and determination. The book serves as a reminder that extraordinary accomplishments are often achieved through collective effort rather than individual talent alone. This is a fabulous book about overcoming difficulties and working as a team to achieve a common goal.
By Ernest Hemingway
Although this is a relatively short book, this classic novel delivers a profound message about perseverance and courage. This story about an old fisherman battling both the sea and his own limitations is one of the finest examples of resilience in literature.
By Robert Louis Stevenson
Every gentleman should occasionally indulge his sense of adventure. I’ve read this book several times and it always brings out the boy in me. Treasure Island has captivated readers for generations with its memorable characters and buried treasures. In my opinion, it’s one of the greatest adventure stories ever written.
By David McCullough
Few years were more important to the future of the United States than 1776. McCullough’s masterful account brings to life the struggles and uncertainties faced by George Washington and the Continental Army. Instead of presenting the American Revolution as inevitable, he reminds us how fragile the cause truly was and how much it depended upon the courage and perseverance of the American Founding Fathers.
By Ron Chernow
George Washington’s reputation often overshadows the man himself. Chernow’s biography gives us a detailed and compelling portrait of America’s first president. The book does a great job showing both his strengths and his weaknesses. It’s a fascinating study of duty and leadership that I think is highly relevant today.
By Amor Towles
If there’s a novel perfectly suited for readers of The Ways of a Gentleman, this might be it. Count Alexander Rostov is a man of grace and refinement who finds himself under house arrest in a Moscow hotel following the Russian Revolution. The novel is absolutely fantastic and highly entertaining. It explores character, resilience, friendship, and the importance of maintaining one’s standards regardless of the circumstances. I go back and read this book once a year and I always feel like I’m visiting old friends.

By F. Scott Fitzgerald
In my opinion, few novels capture the spirit of summer like The Great Gatsby. Set in the glamour of the Roaring Twenties, this masterpiece explores ambition, love, wealth, and the pursuit of the American Dream. On the fun side, the reader can envision the lavish parties and beautiful settings described in the book. However, underneath all of that is a timeless cautionary tale about character, and the consequences of chasing the wrong things.
In my mind, a great book is one of the few investments that consistently pays dividends. It can entertain, educate, inspire, and challenge us to be better. More importantly, it can introduce us to ideas and perspectives that remain with us the rest of our lives.
This summer, make reading a priority. Take a book to the beach or pack one for your next family road trip. Resist the temptation to spend every spare moment scrolling through your phone and instead spend some time reading..
Thanks for reading! This post is public so feel free to share it.
