haley sheppard, ‘when light meets water / in the day in the night / we rejoice in our vernal lineage’, 2026

when light meets water… started with two solo walks around my neighbourhood on the spring equinox (March 20th, 2026). I set out on my first walk in the late morning, listening and sketching as a way of holding onto the sounds. I set out for the second walk around midnight, under the light of street lamps and the moon. I held Null Point’s program in my mind on these walks, noticing how everyday observations became imbued with meaning, connecting the layers of my positionality back to my evolving surroundings. I oscillated between listening to the sounds, walking on the territory of the Haudenosaunee, Anishinaabeg, and Chonnonton peoples, and questioning how I listen as a guest on this land. I notice the ease of walking that my able body and whiteness allows for in the daylight, and the sharp shift in alertness, as a femme person after dark.
