When you’ve been laid off, removed yourself from a toxic work environment, or you’re trying to find your next thing, so much of your energy goes toward waiting to be seen and chosen.
After a while, it can take a brutal toll on your mental health.
Sure, that can be true. Some of the most brilliant companies in our lifetime have been built in these hard seasons.
Pressure can absolutely reveal ideas you didn’t know were in you.
But every job or work transition does not need to immediately become a business plan. Everyone is not meant to be an entrepreneur, and that is perfectly okay.
The zillions of applications with zero response, tons of resume rewrites (by yourself and Career Coaches), posting to an invisible audience, trying to prove your worth to people who won’t even send a rejection email - literally feeling like everything is caving in, and you just need a small lifeline.
On those kinds of days, one of the best things you can do is to put a stop to everything. Close the laptop, push back from your desk, leave your workspace and go out into the world and…
Give to someone else.
Yep – when you feel like you literally have nothing left to give, give purely and without strings or motives, to someone else.
Because oftentimes, you’ll see that the blessing that you are to somebody else comes right back to you 10 times over.
When I was in my lowest season, I gave my time to help a family friend launch her nonprofit in honor of her stillborn son. What came back to me? A 6-figure partnership for my own nonprofit that same year.
Also, giving reminds you that you’re not powerless.
It is tangible proof that as long as you have breath in your body, you have purpose on this Earth and can be of purpose to someone else, job title or not.
You start noticing other people. And then you start seeing patterns, problems and gaps in the things around you.
Fresh ideas start to swarm you with how your experience, your ideas, your care, or your perspective could actually help.
This is exactly where your next move starts to show itself.
It’s not going to appear because you forced it - but because you got back into motion.
And just maybe, after you start having those aha moments, you can shift your perspective of this season a little differently.
This is not something you would’ve chosen for yourself, and it is incredibly difficult, but maybe look at this time as space.
Space to breathe, think, notice, and dare - even DREAM again.
Space to remember that your life is bigger than a job title (especially this!).
So yes, maybe this is the time to start the business.
Maybe this is the time to build the idea you kept putting off.
Or maybe this is just the time to breathe long enough to remember what’s still possible for you.
But on the days when the job search makes you feel empty, or the clients aren’t coming fast enough…
Give.
Because the world needs what is still alive in you before a job title ever confirms it.
