The other day I looked at Daniel, exhausted, and said I really am properly pregnant now. I’m 29 weeks so I’m not quite huge yet, but my body is definitely slowing down. A feeling I really dislike as a chronic overdo-er and productivity maniac. It’s not that I dislike resting, it’s that I dislike that my body is having such a harder time doing the things it used to be able to do. But with this being my second pregnancy I know that this is just part of the process. It’s my body’s way of protecting Baby Boy and prioritizing his growth.
Celia and I were sick for about a week and a half which was a total bummer. Daniel only felt bad for about two days, but with pregnancy mine lingered a lot longer. So on top of pregnancy I was sort of forced to rest even more. Then the most intense work week snuck up on me and I came out of (mostly, I was still recovering) being sick only to have a really demanding week of work. Which meant that not only our garden got neglected, but my other work duties like actually posting were also neglected. Not neglected per se… did I mention I’m an over do-er? So it’s Monday as I’m writing this and I’m excited for the week ahead. A week I plan on filling with a healthy amount of rest and productivity.
Other updates:
I met with a birth doula today, whom I will be hiring!
My glucose test came back negative, but I do have slighttttttly low platelets again (I had that with Celia’s pregnancy too). However, I’m genuinely not concerned and will be incorporating more beef liver and potentially some other stuff.
📚 WHAT TO READ: I literally only got 15% of the way through The Shampoo Effect and literally just don’t care. So now I’m in a reading slump. My sister and I have a couple of books on our list and I simply need to decide which one to read next.
I’m also trying to start each morning with a morning devotional and reading the accompanying passage if I have the time.
📺 WHAT TO WATCH: Daniel and I have gotten totally and completely sucked into the show Your Friends and Neighbors on Apple TV. Warning: we’ve been staying up later than we would like to because we don’t want to stop watching it.
🎧 WHAT TO LISTEN TO:
We are undeniably a raw milk kind of household here. Let me rephrase that, we are a raw milk from a trusted source kind of family. I have known for a long time that high quality, unhomogenized raw milk is nutritionally superior to pasteurized, homogenized milk due to the enzyme retention, fat molecules, protein structure, and probiotic benefits. However, it wasn’t until I listened to two different podcasts from the Grounded Wellness by Primally Pure podcast that I REALLY understood how big of a difference raw milk makes. To be completely frank with you, I left listening to those podcasts believing that pasteurized milk is the gross milk. I know that sounds extreme, but just listen to the podcasts and come up with your own beliefs! Episodes in question:
I’m starting a new Substack series about detoxing our lives and I thought what a funnier way to kick it off than to share a few ways that I have detoxed my husband.
I don’t like overgeneralizing men and I really don’t want to come off as a man hater here, but I feel like it’s a common occurrence for the men in our lives to be less receptive to making health minded swaps and choices. Daniel hasn’t always been this ultra health-minded man. Very far from that actually. I would say he has been on his own 6ish year journey to heal himself and make a shift into someone who I would say is one of or the healthiest person I know. So I’m not saying all men do these things and need to detox, but I will be sharing Daniel’s detoxifying items/swaps in the hopes it helps someone else. Some of the swaps are free, some costs money, but either way LET’S GET INTO IT.
Detox #1:
The absolute biggest detoxifying factor in Daniel’s life was cutting out alcohol. Daniel grew up drinking from a terribly young age so it was something that was sort of engrained in him. There came a point where he had to decide to stop drinking during the week and only on occasion on the weekends. Once we were preparing to conceive Celia he cut out all alcohol and only drinks on a very rare occasion to this day. The whole not drinking thing also got easier because he no longer works in the world of finance where every out of office get together revolved around drinking. Events that he would often skip out on entirely to avoid the social backlash of not drinking, or he would just commit to the rouge comments and drink NA beers. Drinking wrecked his mood, sleep, gut health, glucose levels, and productivity. The single biggest thing he did to detoxify his life was cutting out (98%) alcohol.
