Here is an interesting one for you, 10 years ago, I wrote an email called Dreams Vs Reality, talking about what the Online Writing/Online Marketing life was really like…

It was written at almost the exact moment I started to step back from the Online Marketing world and follow my dream.

Dreams vs Reality

Ahh the simple life of a marketer, kicking back in the hammock with a mojito and a good book…

I wish!

It’s almost the end of August, and it seems I’ve missed summer. I’ve been in the office for 8 to 12 hours every day, working like a Trojan (the soldiers, silly!) all to one end.

Simplification.

I am sure you are like me and have an idea what your dream business is.

Then you have the reality of your business, and it’s very rare for those 2 to bear any resemblance to each other.

My Dream

I love to write, create content and to teach.

I feel I really missed my vocation when I decided not to go to college to become a teacher.

I can imagine myself in a tweed jacket with leather patches on the elbows teaching a class of 15-year-olds about the Geomorphology of the Atacama Desert.

So my dream day would be writing a couple of emails and a blog post. Then spending an hour adding a new module to my next course.

That would be followed up by a couple of hours of coaching and strategy calls with my consultancy clients.

Bliss

The Reality.

The reality is nothing like that, It is semi-organised chaos.

Some of the observant ones among you might have noticed a few changes in the past few weeks.

I’ve started to focus on the dream part of my business.

I want the dream & I want the business I always wanted.

I want to be able to spend more time writing and creating content.

So I want to lay down a challenge to you.

For the next 6 weeks focus on achieving your dream business.

Get a plan, take action, tweak your plan, refine it, scale it.

Set your goals and work at getting them.

What do you want?

More leads?

More sales?

More traffic?

To create a product?

( BTW. I read a post today about a guy who set up a course teaching artists how to get exhibitions he made $68K in 4 weeks starting with no list!)

Set yourself a goal and go for it.

Just Follow Through.

So that was the reality of my business back then and the dream I wanted to achieve. What does it look like now?

This morning I wrote and published an article, before I headed into town for a coffee. After a leisurely walk back, I wrote this newsletter, which I’ll send out tomorrow (Friday).

Next on the admittedly small list today is to record a video for the community, where this month I am running a challenge to write and publish a mini book. Today's video will be about how I promote my books.

That's it for the day. The rest is mine to do what I want with.

The main question, which I bet most people would ignore and not reference, is how does today’s income compare to 10 years ago when I was full on marketing 10-12 hours a day…. Nowhere near!

Back then, $500 days were an ok day. Today my daily target is a more modest $100 day however, on the flipside, I no longer have the expenses that came with the lifestyle I had then, sports car, Michelin-starred restaurants, 2 rounds of golf each week.

A more modest business has led to a more modest lifestyle, and I am happier than I have ever been!

I write a daily article, I teach in my community, and I create regular courses and training for the members there.. You could pretty much say I nailed my dream!

Yay go me!

So that’s it , it seems that I have proved that your dreams can become reality if you just focus and are realistic about what you want.

So this week, make a plan and just follow through with it. It might just come to fruition!
