The Sustainability Centre · The Sustainability Centre’s Substack

From inspiring courses and events to simple moments of nature and connection, there’s plenty to get involved in. Whether you join us for a workshop, an evening event, or just a quiet visit, we look forward to welcoming you to the Centre soon.

We’re delighted to announce that we are the 2026 charity partner for The Southern Sustainability Partnership, taking over from Marwell Zoo. As organisers of the annual Big Sustainability Expo and Awards, they play a key role in championing sustainability across the region, and we’re excited to be working alongside them throughout the year.

Our South Downs Eco Lodge continues to strengthen its sustainability journey through new local partnerships. Cross Valley, a Winchester-based supplier, now provides our dairy in reusable glass bottles and jars, helping to reduce single-use plastics. We’ve also partnered with The South Downs Linen, who professionally launder and press our linen using spring water from their own borehole, while carefully managing water usage throughout their process. Together, these collaborations support our commitment to sustainability, local sourcing and independent businesses within our community.

Rachael and her team of volunteers continue to share seasonal produce grown on site outside the Beech Café and Main Centre Building, with donations welcome. Recent offerings have included fresh salad bags, chard and Babington’s Leek from the Forest Garden. Pop down and take a look-you might even pick up a bag of fresh, seasonal goodness!

Our wellbeing workshops offer a fully immersive sensory experience, inviting you to slow down, reconnect and find calm in nature. Guided through simple, effective techniques, you’ll be supported to tune into the natural rhythm around you-birdsong in the canopy and the gentle movement of wind through the trees-creating space to pause, breathe and reset.

For those working with young people, our CPD course Supporting Children with Anxiety and Trauma, led by Jon Cree, offers an inspiring and practical approach to wellbeing in outdoor learning. You’ll explore nature-based tools and strategies to respond with confidence, compassion and clarity, making a meaningful difference to the children you support.

Upcoming events
There’s something special about evenings outdoors as the light fades-when the air softens, stories feel closer, and everything slows just enough to truly take it in. This season, we invite you to experience that atmosphere through two unique events. Folk in the Forest brings live folk music into the woodland, with melodies weaving through the trees to create a warm, intimate evening full of connection and soul. We also welcome Macbeth by The HandleBards, a bold, fast-paced and inventive retelling of Shakespeare’s darkest tale, packed with humour, music and playful mischief. Whether you come for the music, the storytelling, or simply the joy of being outdoors together, these are evenings made to be remembered.

We’re looking for friendly, organised people with initiative and an interest in sustainability, community or education. Volunteers attend monthly planning meetings, support event delivery, share ideas, help promote activities, and represent The Sustainability Centre in a welcoming and professional way.
