Happy Independence Day, folks! Bringing you a repost from 2024 on this holiday weekend. See you soon with more regularly scheduled content, and enjoy the holiday.
In honor of Independence Day, we are taking a break from normal content to bring you a list of 10 iconic American marine animals. Check it out:
1. Florida Manatee
A subspecies of the West Indian manatee, people can’t help falling in love with these gentle giants.
2. Southern Resident Killer Whale
If you go whale watching in Seattle, Washington’s Puget Sound, you might catch a glimpse of these orcas.
3. California Sea Lion
These big pinnipeds are easy to spot on Pacific Coast beaches.
4. Hawaiian Green Sea Turtle
These turtles can weigh over 300 pounds!
5. Giant Pacific Octopus
Octopuses are likely the smartest animals in the sea. (And this is my favorite of all 10 animals on the list.)
6. Great White Shark
What would a marine animal list be without Jaws? While great white sharks can be found around the globe, they are a particularly beloved (and feared) shark species in American waters.
7. Rice’s Whale
Truly an American treasure, these elusive whales are found exclusively in the Gulf of Mexico. Estimates suggest that there are fewer than 100 individuals left.
8. Sea Otter
These fuzzy, social creatures are enough to warm anyone’s heart.
9. Blue Whale
You can find the world’s largest animal swimming through American waters.
Note: I highly recommend you click on the image below to watch the full video that captures how amazingly athletic these massive whales can be.
10. Bull Shark
These sharks are unique in their ability to handle freshwater for stretches of time. Sharks in the Mississippi River, anyone?
Signing off on this holiday edition. See you soon with a new wave of ocean updates!
