Questionnaires have been a part of our world going back to at least Marcel Proust, if not to the Phoenicians, or at least the Greeks. Questionnaires are what enables us as a species to find out the fun parts of what people are like, without having to do too much heavy slogging through long blocks of words. Repopularized by Vanity Fair, Questionnaires are now a staple of old media and new media alike, and who are we to be left aside. Here then, to be put to some – but not all – of the most interesting people I know is my Cultural Census – my shot to really see where they stand in the tumultuous cultural deathmatch in which we live today.
Writer, director, producer Zak Penn has been part of some of Hollywood’s most interesting projects for over 30 years now. After bursting into the big leagues in his early 20’s with a spec script that became Last Action Hero, he has been involved with some of Hollywood’s biggest tentpole projects including Free Guy, Ready Player One, The Avengers and The X-Men. At the other end of the spectrum, he has written and directed some fascinating indie projects including Incident at Loch Ness – starring Werner Herzog - and one of my very favorite documentaries of recent times – Atari: Game Over. Last weekend, he was out and about at San Diego Comic-Con with the team from the new HBO comedy, of the Big Bang family – Stuart Fails to Save the Universe, which he created alongside Chuck Lorre.
So what drives the soul of a profilic and varied creator like Zak Penn? We put the Cultural Census to him to find out.
