Flashback: Silly Season or Open Season?

This is a post from 2025 but it is more relevant than ever. A certain “royal reporter” (who used to be favoured by a US based royal couple) has re-emerged. His ridiculous claims include that the royal rota publishes only what the royal family want them to and basically print PR releases. 🙄 My post from earlier this week disproves that utter nonsense but here is another from last September that also applies. The royals are back at work! September is here, August is over and the royal silly season is in the rear view mirror. For those who don’t know what I’m talking about, here’s a little explainer of royal silly season. Silly season is the time of year (usually for most of the month of August) when the royal family generally take their summer break and drop out of public view for a bit. This causes the entire royal media to lose their collective minds. They still have pages to fill, headlines to write and engagement to generate but no actual royal news happening means that they have to manufacture most of it themselves. The result is royal silly season - weeks of random, bizarre, made up or exaggerated click bait nonsense.

Usually I just see it for what it is and ignore the noise but somehow this year felt a little different - a little nastier with a bit more of a sinister edge to it. If you’ve been paying attention to royal news for the past month or so you may have noticed that it seems the royal media are out for blood - Prince William’s to be exact. There has been story after story attacking him and Catherine for their decision to move house, their choice of holidays, their charity work and for his choices regarding his brother. It’s been relentless and, at times, frankly vicious.

I absolutely believe that public figures like William and Catherine should not be above scrutiny. Nobody is perfect and people in such a privileged position should definitely have their decisions examined and criticised (if they are the public’s business ). I don’t believe in blind fandom. But nor do I believe in criticism for criticism’s sake or to push a particular agenda. And what has been occurring this past month is most definitely the latter.
