Melat Kiros Has Put Hakeen Jeffries on Suicide Watch

This is going to be a quick one.

You are going to see so much writing here and on Twitter trying to dissect why Melat Kiros won her race against 30-year incumbent Diana DeGette last night, and then trying to explain what it means.

I am going to save you all some time, so like this post and share it so more people can save their time.

Melat Kiros won for the same reason Zohran Mamdani won: people believe deep in their hearts that America is better than this.

This being the total oligarchic control of our past, present, and future.

Americans are dumb but they’re not dumb.

Anyone can see that we have nearly squandered the entire American experiment all so the less than 11,000 centi-millionaires and billionaires in this country can be bored and hate each other while they party on yachts. People know there is infinite potential for us all to have easy access to the things we need—nutritious food, clean water, clean air, and shelter—but that we’ve twisted ourselves up to make it hard and expensive instead.

But, even if the average person can’t point these two places out on a map, they also increasingly understand that you don’t get rapid, never ending wealth absorption by Wall Street without rapid, never ending assistance from their friends on K Street.

And it is because of the increasing ability of people to play the game of cause and effect that the typical mainstream Democratic blackmailing of “just wait, things are already good, you’re too impatient” falls flatter and flatter every time.

People are looking in their wallets and having flys buzz out of its emptiness. What good is a tax credit to them?

People are applying to 1,000s of jobs to make less money than last year and in most cases still getting ghosted because of AI overloading ATS systems. What good is a jobs program that takes 5 years to implement to them?

People are noticing that their kids and their grandparents can’t go outside for longer than 30 minutes at a time in the summer anymore. What good is a 25 years transition to renewables good to them?

People are traumatized from seeing skeleton after skeleton of middle eastern children appear on their screens that they know they paid for. What good is a stern letter to Likud party members to them?

People are hurting now, but people are yearning for a future where their baseline of hurt they expect from the government is less, too. They need candidates who can promise both those things and, I’m sorry, but literally none of the mainstream Democrats are willing to offer either (though, they love to say they do).

No, seriously, they love to say they do.

Just as with so many of the incumbents who have now lost or who I believe will lose, their supporters (sidenote: which, by the way, who the fuck are they? I am convinced no body actually supports people like Haley Stevens or Jared Moskowitz or Diana DeGette, they just vote for them) love to tout all the things candidates who are aligned with the establishment say they want to do.

They want to pass things like public healthcare … but it’s too complicated, so go pay my friends in Big Pharma to die slower.

They want to make housing more affordable … but property values need to stay locked, so get ready to pay $2,500 for a one bedroom.

They want to protect people’s sanity and privacy online … but can’t be bothered (they’re addicted to their screens to), so get ready to pay rent to the insanity machines forever.

And people just know that all of that hand-wringing is just bullshit. It was very hard to set up a system where all of the money flows upward, but we did that anyway.

So, why not the other way?

That ^ is literally the exact conversation that voters to the left and to the right of the Democratic party are making as they evaluate candidates right now, in every race, in every state. The question they are asking is: which side are you on and how do I know you’re not lying?

And people like Melat Kiros and Bernie Sanders and Randy Villegas and Zohran Mamdani and Oliver Larkin don’t have to have a preamble before they give their answer: “I am on the side of working class Americans, and you know because I do not take money that would make you distrust me.”
